Victims of age discrimination often have trouble finding new employment. First, it is difficult for a highly compensated senior employee to replace that job with a similar one. Second, older workers have a hard time getting a new job because of perceptions people have about their age. Aside from blatant age-discrimination, employers are reluctant to hire older workers because they cannot have the long-term career that a younger person could. There may be unspoken concerns about the older workers health and attendance.
The result is that many older workers who lose their jobs will never work again at the same level. They will also endure longer periods of unemployment between jobs. These long periods of unemployment and lower paying replacement jobs translate into high jury verdicts and settlements.
